About DKA Woodworking
DKA Woodworking is based out of Tucson, AZ. While many pieces feature local wood such as mesquite and olive, wood is sourced from around the country. A mixed wood piece may feature boxelder from a farm in North Dakota, white oak or black maple from a Minnesota forest alongside woods native to the Southwest such as olive, mesquite or African Sumac (Rhus lancea). Originally from North Dakota, David has been living in Arizona for over 30 years. Working with his hands has always come naturally to David, though the mediums have varied.
As a child, he tinkered alongside his family on the farm before working on his own farm. He spent part of his career working as a certified diesel mechanic before putting his nimble fingers to use as a licensed massage therapist. Whether it's soil, engines, muscle knots or wood - David is most at home working with his hands.

Planning a piece takes time and room to percolate. A piece of unfinished wood sometimes needs to site on a shelf for a year or more, waiting to reveal what it’s meant to be.
From Start to Finish
Watch a slab of white oak become a vessel in the slideshow.
To start, a slab of white oak that has been cut, milled and dried for over a year
First, holes are cute to the proper depth. Then the bandsaw is used to cut rough corners and make the general layout.
Guidelines are drawn and the vessel is cut down slowly and gradually.
Most of the carving is done with power tools with a lot of follow-up sanding by hand.
The final piece before several coats of walnut oil.
